Needham Reservoir Remediation and Stormwater Improvements
The Needham Reservoir Remediation and Stormwater Improvements project aims to address stormwater runoff from the nearby DPW yard and athletic field parking lot, which has caused sediment accumulation in the Reservoir. Approximately 15 years ago, a roughcut drainage channel was installed to reduce the sediment-laden runoff entering the Reservoir. However, this channel is not optimized for sediment removal. To maintain the health of the Reservoir, the project will focus on improving stormwater management, enhancing water quality and wildlife habitat, and removing the existing sediment buildup.
The Needham Reservoir, located behind the Department of Public Works (DPW) Offices at 470 Dedham Avenue, covers about six acres. It was originally constructed in 1903 to supply water to Needham’s first municipal pumping station, but since the 1950s, it has been used mainly for recreational purposes. In 2020, a fully accessible perimeter trail was added. The Reservoir is currently about five feet deep, with a dam at the western end to control water levels.
The project includes:
- Repairing the existing trail and upgrading areas prone to washout during heavy storms
- Installing an information kiosk along the trail to provide visitors with event updates and notices.
- Constructing a swale to treat stormwater from the athletic field area before it enters the Reservoir.
- Isolating sections of the Reservoir for sediment removal to improve water quality as the outlet flows toward the Charles River
- Restoring wetlands and banks adjacent to the trail
Currently, work is underway to construct the water quality swale and repair the trail. Sediment removal will begin in early October 2024, with the entire project expected to be completed by the end of November 2024.
These improvements will benefit the community by maintaining this valuable public resource, improving water quality, and supporting the wildlife and habitat within the Reservoir. The project will also help mitigate future sediment accumulation, ensuring the ongoing health of our public water resources.
Project Status:
12/20/2024 The work is substantially complete. There will be some additional work to the trail, but no expectations of interference with trail accessability.
