Weaving a Web of Safety

Funded by the Needham Community Council, Needham’s Parent Coffee series: Weaving a Web of Safety, has been and continues to be a successful outreach strategy to inform and engage parents of teens on the topic of preventing and reducing youth alcohol and drug use. Originally created by the Needham Public Schools, the Needham Youth Commission in collaboration with the Needham Community Council is dedicated to continuing to bring this vibrant program to Needham parents. A few program facts and details: 

  • These are offered at no cost (thanks to the Needham Community Council)
  • The program is fun and informative
  • Programs are held in the evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 in your home
  • We will help you identify and recruit other parents to participate
  • Over 650 Needham parents have participated in this program
  • This is an important program which is having an impact in the community

Program Goals

  • Reduce/prevent youth alcohol and drug use by encouraging parents to increase effective communication with their teens and monitor their activities.
  • Share new information on youth substance use and effective prevention strategies.
  • Trends in use, predictors, risk and protective factors –the goal being to delay age of onset and experimentation.
  • Connect parents with each other to encourage communication to form this web of safety.
  • Understand the "Three Factors" regarding a youth’s decision to use.
