The Department of Public Works has checked the condition of all fields, and the following decisions have been made:
All fields and diamonds are OPEN today.
The DPW checks the fields daily, and a message is updated after 3 p.m., weekdays when there is new information. No field may be used if there is standing water, and no unauthorized maintenance work may be done. Field decisions are final and may not be superseded by other officials. On weekends and holidays, decisions are made by League Officials. High school and middle school athletic decisions are made by the DPW and the high school athletic director, and those decisions may differ from the community decisions made later in the afternoon.
If it starts raining after 3 p.m. when fields were open, league official will make the decision on whether fields will remain open or not.
4/16/15 Update: All fields - including all of the Newman fields - are OPEN, today. Spring is officially here!
All fields will remain CLOSED through Tuesday, April 14th. We appreciate everyone's support and patience - staying off the fields, refraining from doing your own maintenance on the fields, and waiting for the "go-ahead" to get on the fields.
4/2/15 Update: A review of fields will be made after this weekend's warmer temperatures and melting. An update will be provided Monday, April 6th. We appreciate everyone's support and patience - staying off the fields, refraining from doing your own maintenance on the fields, and waiting for the "go-ahead" to get on the fields.
All fields will remain CLOSED through Tuesday, April 7th. Some fields may begin to open on Wednesday, April 8th, depending on field conditions. An update will be provided on April 1st. The synthetic turf fields will not officially open until possibly April 8th, though some informal use may be scheduled around the High School schedule. We appreciate everyone's support and patience - staying off the fields, refraining from doing your own maintenance on the fields, and waiting for the "go-ahead" to get on the fields.
Needham Parks and Forestry Superintendent Ed Olsen and Director of Park and Recreation Patty Carey – with the help of Recreation Supervisor Brendan Croak - have put together an informative document with an update on the status of the field conditions in Needham.
On behalf of all of us at Park and Recreation we want to commend all DPW divisions, Police, Fire, Public Facilities-Operations, the Emergency Management Team, and all the other Town departments who kept Needham open and thriving during this winter!!
We hope you will share this information with your friends, neighbors, and fellow athletes.
This has been an unusual winter – and it will take a while to catch up to a typical spring.
We thank you for your patience!
3/9/15 Update: Fields remain CLOSED until further notice. Please DO NOT shovel or move snow on your own.
