Paver Crosswalk Boxes

Welcome to Needham's new crosswalk boxes.  Unlike the standard type of crosswalk, where pedestrians are allowed to only cross in one direction, the new crosswalk boxes will allow pedestrians to cross in any direction they wish.  Most notably, pedestrians will be able to cross diagonally across the intersection.  These crosswalk boxes will be installed in the intersection of Chapel Street, Chestnut Street and Great Plain Avenue and the intersection of Highland Avenue, Great Plain Avenue and Dedham Avenue.

The pedestrian phasing signal is timed to allow for elderly and disabled accessibility, with the signal being timed for crossing three feet per second - longer than most intersections.

The installation project will start on July 16th and continue through August 13th, weather permitting.  The project has been broken into phases to allow for continued limited use of the intersections during the installation.  Further detailed information will be available, including road closures and detours, beginning July 7th.
